Episode 59: Lance Plays Mind Games

episode image

In this podcast Scott & John are joined by Jeff Helfand from Veloreviews.com. We discuss a bike sharing scheme with a difference and paramedics using bikes in London.

They also talk about Tom Zirbel not knowing what DHEA is, Lance Armstrong’s mind games, and a night stage at the Vuelta as well as gear, a review of the Velorbis Churchill Ballon and our picks of the week.

  • Re: Your chinese crime foiling cyclist, someone must have sent you this vintage guide to self protection whilst on a bicycle;

"How you may Best Defend Yourself when Attacked by Modern Highwaymen, Showing how you should Act when Menaced by Foot-pads, when Chased by another Cyclist, and when Attacked under various other Circumstances; Showing, also, how the Cycle may be used as a Weapon."

See also this, from the Jackie Chan film "Project A", which is probably the definitive use of a bike in self defence.

  • Also remember the scene in The Flying Scotsman where Graham Obree (Jonny Lee Miller) dispatches his old childhood tormentors (now ne'er do wells) by brandishing his bicycle at them.

    Spiffing Stuff
  • PML! That's fantastic. "Ride boldly up to your assailant's side, leap bravely from your machine full upon him."

  • Looking for the "show notes" for this podcast - I'd like to follow up on a few of the items discussed, but didn't catch the website addresses...

Great to see, err... hear that Eddy is back in the open of the show!

    Thanks!

    - Will
  • Notes up for Ep 59. Sorry for the delay. As of now they'll be on the site the same time as the 'cast is available.

    Cheers

  • Hi Will,

John deals with the show notes and says he'll have them up tomorrow. The poor bloke has been working horrendous hours trying to deliver mail in more than 2 foot of snow recently - a task I don't envy in the slightest!

Yes, Eddie Almighty is back and I'll make sure not to be so lax as to ever leave him out in the future ;-)

    Cheers,

    Scott.
  • Really interested in the powerwash thingy Scott had as pick of the week.

I live in a flat and as well as storage issues for bikes and restricted space for maintenance etc cleaning is also a problem.

I've been looking for a power washer with a reservoir for a while as running a hose out of the kitchen window to the garden below isn't really practical.

Definitely be checking this out to clean the road salt off my bike

    Cheers
  • Aye, great, if slightly left field, pick. I'm having one!
