  • Good evening gents!

Great show this week - and nothing negative to say!

What makes a good cycling podcast?

Right now, I have to say that the Top 3 Podacsts have to be The Spokesmen, Real Peloton and you guys - common theme – variety, no guests with their own agenda and don’t bore me with “listener feedback” - so a positive spin - people who know their subject, are articulate and can communicate.

However, for the future and on a slightly different tack to OwenP, I too am becoming a seasoned cycling podcast listener and am concerned about homogenisation of podcasts.

I listen to pretty much all the podcasts whilst I ride solo ( quite country lanes so low risk) and feel that so much is now a variation on a theme, with the exception of you guys, Matt/Ned and the Spokesmen, and really hope that you "pro's" – as we try to do here in France – resist the globalization of cycing podcasts.

So – in no particular order :

    1. Please don’t go down the "we are interviewing XXX this week" route - i.e. its tantamount to repeats! Same guest, same info – different show and a week later!

    2. Leave the “public” out and treat the “public” as interested parties for feedback rather than items of interest or features – e.g. Veloreviews - Fun Run Robbie - professional podcast listener, and sounds like an alright guy but limited human interest story for a podcast and the both interview and podcast far too long.

    3. Can you be all things to all people – no, but having and retaining a broad audience base covers and protects a lot more bases than the niche fan base that I see 2johns and cyclingnews having.

In musical terms, keep your fresh material rather than regurgitating someone elses crap, most great bands don’t get their fans to write songs for them so keep audience participation to an acceptable level ….if the Velocast is Zeppelin– then “Johns” are Tangerine Dream (Wake me up in an hour or so) and Rendell and Boulting are Les McKeown and Eric Faulkner ( teen appeal but will they last???)

I could go on …but you get the gist!!!!
  • Hi Mark
I think we can safely say we're on the same page re the future direction of the Vcast. Zeppelin comparison too flattering. ;o)

    J
  • Thanks. Know that recumbents are a bit 'out there'. I do cycle uprights too - although Andrew hasn't let me loose on his carbon Storck yet.

I mentioned the Velocast to them and they said they knew you. I've got involved in bike related activity via being a bike trainer and not having a car. Just did rental and then sales built up.

Do you know Colin Russell from ERC? Sandra Murdoch?

I saw link from Velorbis - been looking at city bikes and enjoyed your review.

    Got interesting tandem ;-)

    Cheers D

  • I know one Russell from Edinburgh.........but despite that have heard good things about his brother (who I think is Colin)! ;o) Sadly, I'm old enough to have only one Murdoch in mind when I think about the ERC and that's old Jack Murdoch who's no longer with us. Any relation?
Velorbis bikes are gorgeous. We asked them for review units since we were so impressed with them. They didn't disappoint!
Jealous that Andrew's riding a Stork, he remains arguably the best mechanic I've ever met. Equal first with Steve McCaw of the Wheelroom.

    Keep in touch

    John
  • I've passed on to the team at shop. If you want to see a Raptobike low racer on your side of 'The Granites' then give me a shout. Mid racer to come soon.

    Cheers

    D
  • Interesed to hear your comments on Rapto Mid Racer. Think this will be very well sorted design.

I'm dealer for Rapto, Challenge, Nazca, ICE and Circe Helios Tandem in Scotland.
Been based at The Bicycle Works in Edinburgh since 2006. Raptobike low racer there if you want a demo.

    Cheers

    David
  • Hey David
I agree, the Rapto looks very nicely thought out.
Say "Hi" to Andrew and John for me.

    Cheers

    John
  • As I mentioned in the show - Recumbents freak the bejeezus out of me. But we might just take you up on the offer ;-)

    Cheers, David. Thanks for posting.

    Scott.

Pez article/interview with Oliphant: http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/?pg=fullstory&id=7998 (which comes from a two-part post on Veloresults.co.uk)

And a good preview/insight with James McCallum (from last month): http://www.veloresults.co.uk/2010/01/james-mccallum-racing-is-my-job-now/

I thought there were more interviews than this but no. I have picked up a lot of info and banter from http://twitter.com/enduraracing and http://twitter.com/brendanmilliken (mechanic) and other tweeters.

  • Thanks, Owen :)
